MCALLEN, Texas – The Kansas City Women's Golf team posted an eighth-place finish today at the UTRGV Invitational at the 72-par, 6,057-yard McAllen Country Club. The Roos made improvements as they shaved off 13 strokes from their team score compared to last week's Rio Verde Invitational. Two Roos finished in the Top 25 individually, sophomores Megan Lucas and Kenni Henson.
Lucas came into the clubhouse 16th overall with a 12-over par 228 (77-76-75). She impressed today with three birdies during the 18 holes and finished her event with six total birdies. Teammate Henson notched the best one round score with a 74 during the second round and ended up with a 17-over par 233 (82-74-77) to take 23rd overall.
"The ladies did a great job bouncing back in round two, but struggled to keep that momentum going throughout round three," said head coach Brianna Portmann. "We got off to a great start as a team today, but started making a few mistakes that cost this team from capitalizing on the momentum from round two.
"Playing with just four players is a difficult feat. These ladies must dig deep and there is little room for error. And while these results are no reflection of this team's talent, this experience should help motivate us to continue learning and become better as we compete each week."
Freshman Hayley Jones, who had the most birdies on the team with seven, tied for 29th overall with a 236 (77-77-82). Tying for the 38th spot, senior Jaime Bellingham shot a 240 (82-77-81).
Kansas City carded a three-round score of 318-304-315/937 for a 73-over par. Kansas City and Stephen F. Austin State were in a battle all day for the seventh spot, but the Lumberjacks ended the tournament seven strokes ahead of the Roos.
The 304, second-round score is the third-lowest team score the Roos have fired during the 2019-20 season.
The Roos were solid on the short-range holes with a 3.27 average on all par-three holes. That average was fourth-best amongst the competitors.
Fellow league member New Mexico State won the team championship with a 302-295-288/885 (+21).
