Melanie Brecka had her sixth-straight double-double while De'Janae Arnold hit .550 in the win
TULSA, Okla. - Kansas City Volleyball (11-1, 11-1) shook off a slow start against Oral Roberts this evening, winning three-straight sets after dropping the first and picking up a 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-18, 26-24) win.
Melanie Brecka led the way for Kansas City, sending home a monstrous 21 kills, adding 14 digs for her sixth-straight double-double. Brecka's game-high 21 kills were the most since her career-high 25 against SDSU on Feb. 22, as she has led the Roos in kills in all 12 matches so far this season.
It was a slow start for Kansas City in set one, as the offense just could not seem to get going. Brecka had six kills, but no other Roo had more than two, and the team hit just .132 on the set.
The Roos began going to Alex Ratzlaff in the second set, and she gave the team the boost it needed. Ratzlaff had five of her eight total kills in the second, and KC coasted to victory. Odyssey Warren also gave the Roos a defensive punch, notching two solo blocks in the set.
Kansas City was aided by three service aces from Maddie Renn in the third set, finishing the set on a 12-5 run after it was tied 13-13. Renn finished the match as the Roos' defensive leader, logging 20 digs.
The fourth set proved to be a challenge, but the Roos were up for it. After working their way to a 20-17 lead, KC allowed ORU back into the match, giving up four-straight points. The set went into extra play, but an error by the Golden Eagles and a block by Brecka and De'Janae Arnold lifted the Roos to victory.
Arnold had an efficient night, finishing with 12 kills on .550 hitting, adding two solo blocks and two block assists. Alli Schomers posted her sixth double-double of the year on the night, finishing with 48 assists and 11 digs.
The Roos will travel to Vermillion, S.D. next weekend for a matchup against South Dakota with major conference tournament implications on the line. Kansas City currently holds a half-game lead over the the Coyotes, with South Dakota's scheduled match against Denver today being canceled. The teams will play on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
