KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Volleyball could not overcome a strong attack from Denver this evening, falling 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-17).
Melanie Brecka led the Roos with eight kills followed by Alex Ratzlaff with seven. Alli Schomers and Maddie Renn dug up nine attacks apiece to lead Kansas City, which finished with 36 digs total.
Kansas City had the most luck hitting the ball in the third set, attacking at a .357 clip. Brecka paced the Roos' attack, finishing with five kills in the set.
After the match, the Roos honored seniors Alex Ratzlaff and Alli Schomers for their memorable Kansas City careers.
Ratzlaff has been a key contributor in each of her four years, amassing a total of 561 kills. Last year she played in the libero position, ranking fourth in the WAC in aces per set and seventh in digs per set. This season, she has been an anchor on the court for the Roos, playing all six rotations and acting as KC's primary serve receiver. In her career, she has twice been named to the Academic All-WAC team, was named WAC Player of the Week in October of 2018, and was named to the All-Jackrabbit Invite team in 2019. Her current mark of 117 career service aces is fourth in program history, and her career average of 3.30 digs per set is sixth in program history.
Schomers will go down as one of the greatest setters to ever take the court for Kansas City. A four-year starter, she has led the team in assists each of the past four seasons. After spending her first two seasons in a two-setter system, she took over as the Roos' lone setter last year and became just the third player in program history to win the Conference Setter of the Year award. She did so by averaging 10.32 assists per set, the 10th-best single-season mark in program history. She was also top-ten in the WAC in service aces with 33. Schomers also put together a streak of 36-straight matches with 30-plus assists, the longest in program history. The streak included 22 matches with 40-plus assists and 11 with 50-plus, including a career-high 58 assist performance against Grand Canyon on Nov. 22, 2019. In addition to her Setter of the Year award, Schomers has been named Academic All-Conference three times and was named Second Team All-WAC last season. Her current career mark of 3,239 assists places her third in program history and her average of 8.17 assists per set would rank as the sixth-best in program history.
The Roos now look forward to Sioux Falls, S.D. and the Summit League Championships, where they will take on third-seeded South Dakota in the semifinals. The Roos have played the Coyotes twice this season already, winning both matches in five sets.
