
Roos Drop a Pair to Begin Weekend in El Paso

A career batting night by Sydney Nichols highlighted the Roos' first day at UTEP
EL PASO, Texas – Kansas City Softball (3 - 8) fell in a pair of games to begin its weekend in Texas, falling to Tarleton State, 6-2, and to UTEP, 8-6. Katie Nobel hit her first-career home run to get the Roos on the board against Tarleton, while Sydney Nichols went 3-of-4 from the plate with a career-high-tying three RBI.
GAME 1 | TAR 6 v KC 2 | KEY MOMENTS
- Top 5 / 0 – 2 | Tarleton hit a homerun and put two on the board with two outs. Kansas City immediately got the third out to go to the bottom of the inning.
- Bottom 5 / 0 – 2 | Katie Nobel hit a single to shortstop and in the next play, Sydney Nichols was walked. An error gave the Roos their best scoring chance of the inning with Nichols on third, but they were not able to convert.
- Top 6 / 0 – 6 | Four Tarleton hits added four runs.
- Bottom 7 / 2 – 6 | Noble nailed a homerun with one out and got the Roos on the board with two runs.
GAME 1 | TAR 6 v KC 2 | STATS TO NOTE
- Noble documented her first career home run. Kansas City had three hits, two of which were from Noble.
- No runs for either team until the fifth inning made this the latest scoring game for the Roos thus far in the season.
- In their games previously this season, The Roos documented one or less error, but in this game, they had two errors and their second lowest batting average which ultimately cost them.
GAME 2 | UTEP 8 v KC 6 | KEY MOMENTS
- Bottom 1 / 0-0 | Jenna Milan went 1-2-3 against the Miners lineup in the first inning with two putouts by Nichols to start the game. However, UTEP put four runs on the board in the second inning to take command of the game.
- Top 2 / 2-4 | RBI at-bats by Kiki McCrea and Katherine Karnatz scored Nichols and Marina Karnes to get KC on the board, but the Miners responded with two more in the bottom of the inning.
- Top 4 / 5-6 | Ally Vonfeldt started the inning with a double, followed by an Amelia Fitzgerald RBI single and Nichols's first home run of the season put the Roos were right back in the game.

- Top 5 / 6-7 | After UTEP scored in the bottom of the fourth, Nichols got her final RBI of the night to bring Noble in. UTEP added a run in the bottom of the sixth and the Roos threatened but were unable to score in the seventh.
GAME 2 | UTEP 8 v KC 6 | STATS TO NOTE
- Nichols's three hits was the second three-hit game of her career, the first coming against Lamar while she was playing for Wichita State. Her three RBI performance matched her output against UNLV on Feb. 20 of last season.
- The Roos went for 10 hits, a season-high and the most since a 9-3 win over South Dakota on May 6 of last year.
- Fitzgerald went for two hits on the night, her first multi-hit game of the year.
- Kansas City committed zero errors on the game, and have gone without an error in 6-of-11 games to begin the season.
UP NEXT
Kansas City moves on to their second day of the UTEP Invitational and will face Tarleton State again at 11 a.m. tomorrow, followed by Creighton at 2 p.m.
