Lucas Dutartre was named Newcomer of the Year, while J.W. VanDenBorn earned Coach of the Year honors
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The 2022-23 Summit League Men's Golf individual honors were released this morning, and the league champion Roos were appropriately honored. Lucas Dutartre was named Newcomer of the Year, while Head Coach J.W. VanDenBorn brought home Coach of the Year honors.
In his first year of collegiate golf, Dutartre turned heads around the league. Across 32 rounds of play, he averaged 73.00 strokes per round, the second-best mark on the team. He notched three top-10 finishes, the most of any Roo, including a seventh-place finish in the 96-man Lake Las Vegas Invite and an eighth-place mark at the Summit League Championships. The only freshman to be named to the All-Summit League teams earlier this month, Dutartre is the sixth player in program history to earn Newcomer of the Year honors, the first since Brian Donnelly in 2005.
This season, VanDenBorn displayed his ultimate ability to build a team and create championship culture. After finishing no better than fourth in the past two Summit League Championships, he brought in a pair of freshmen, Dutartre and Mesa Falleur, as well as bringing back Maxence Catherine for his final year of eligibility. This new-look squad proved to have what it takes, earning four-straight top-five finishes late in the regular season and finishing it all off with a final round comeback to claim the Summit League Championship trophy. VanDenBorn has now led the Roos to six NCAA Championship appearances, all in the past 13 seasons. He has been named conference Coach of the Year four times now, including three such honors from the Summit League.
