Gillen Earns Player of the Week Recognition from The Summit Following Impressive Victories at FAU Invite
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -Â Just a week after being named a Player to Watch in the Summit League preseason polls, Carly Gillen wasted no time upholding the nomination, being named Defensive Player of the Week after helping her team bring home a tournament win at the FAU Invitational and securing tournament MVP honors.Â
"Carly has been steady and reliable in her career here but now she is playing with great confidence, and she trusts herself more," Head Coach Christi Posey said. "Her diligence and time spent training is paying off."Gillen emerged as a standout player in the Roos opening weekend in Boca Raton, as she was involved in 22 blocks across three matches, logging five solo blocks and 17 block assists. She started the season strong with one solo block and four block assists in the Roos' four-set win over Fairleigh Dickinson. Her most impressive performance came in the win over Florida Atlantic, going for three solo blocks and 10 block assists, both career-high marks. Gillen's impactful contributions persisted on Saturday with four more blocks, leading Kansas City to a convincing series sweep. In addition, Gillen averaged 2.4 kills per set on .415 hitting across the weekend.
"Her ability to read situations and make the right play at the right time is what sets her apart," Posey said. "Carly would be the 1st person to give credit to her teammates for her being named MVP."
