Jayson Petty led the way, scoring 18 points for the Roos
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A new-look Kansas City Men's Basketball (1-0) took the floor for the first time this evening, taking down Evangel, 80-74. The Roos outscored the Valor by 10 points in the second half, holding Evangel to just one second half three-pointer and nailing five of their own.
In a game where seven players made their Kansas City debuts, it was the returning firepower that helped the Roos come away with the victory. Jayson Petty led the way with 18 points and knocked down four three-pointers, one away from a career-high. Kasheem Grady II provided stability as well, finishing with a team-best plus-minus of plus-17 and scoring 12 points.
The Roos fell behind early and had to battle back, winning the game in the final 10 minutes. With the score knotted at 58-58, CJ Evans found Karmello Branch for a layup and sparked a six-point run that gave Kansas City the lead for good. It was not without some drama as the Valor scratched back within one with 32 seconds remaining, but Grady went 4-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to ice the game.
KC was aided by the rebounding prowess of Chris Dockery, pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds. Eleven of his boards came on the defensive end, limiting Evangel's second chance opportunities. Evans and Branch made strong showings in their Division One debuts, Evans finishing with a team-high five assists and Branch going for 16 points on 4-of-11 three-point shooting.
The Roos get their first road test of the season on Friday, traveling to Southern Illinois for a meeting with the Salukis.
