Jumpers Shine Bright at CMU Invite

Six Roos jumpers finished with top five placements in Fayette
FAYETTE, MO. - Kansas City Track and Field found tremendous collective success at the CMU Invite this past weekend. The Roos were especially sharp in the jumping events as several Roos jumpers lept farther than the competition and set new career-best marks in the process.Â
Six Roos finished with top five placements, four of which were inside the top three in their respective events. Kansas City saw multiple career-best performances in the men's long jump from Nahshon Houston and Miguel Hernandez as well as a first place finish from Taylor Bailey in the high jump.
KEY TRACK RESULTSÂ
- Women's 1500-meter dash - Last weekend at the Jayhawk Spring Fling, Alanie Rivera had set what was for her, a new career-best run in the 1500-meter dash with a time of 5:10.95. At the CMU Invite, Rivera upped the ante, crossing the sub-five minute mark in the 1500m with a brilliant time of 4:57.31 on Saturday afternoon. The time was good for second place in the event and a new personal record for Rivera to place her inside the top 20 in the Summit League in the women's 1500m.Â
- Women's 400-meter dash - Brooke Williams took a turn in the 400-meter dash and showcased her sprinting prowess to the tune of a 1:01.60 time to place ninth amongst stiff competition. Williams' 1:01.60 time ranks seventh overall in the Summit League at large in the women's 400-meter dash.Â
- Men's 100-meter dash - Houston delivered a career-best performance in the men's 100-meter dash at the CMU Invite, running a 10.81 second time to come in 22nd place in the event. Houston's new personal record time surpassed his prior best by under a tenth of a second. Ben Musa also ran well in the 100m, taking the tape in 10.96 seconds giving him the first sub-11 second 100m finish of his career.Â
- Women's multis - Naomi Eyanago was once again a swiss army knife for the Roos, competing in several events for the women's heptathlon. On the track side, Eyanagho notched a 27.87 time in the 200-meter dash to come in fourth place and a time of 15.62 in the 100-meter dash which placed her third for that event. Eyanagho also came in third place for the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:49.60.Â
KEY FIELD RESULTSÂ
- Women's long jump - Jaleesa McWashington returned to action on Saturday and picked up right where she left off, leaping an excellent long jump mark of 5.60 meters to place her fourth in the event. McWashington's jump gives her sole possession of the seventh best long jump mark in the Summit League so far this outdoor season. Â
- Men's long jump - Houston and Hernandez continued their stellar stretch of jumps with their career-best marks of 7.42 meters and 7.17 meters respectively. For Houston, this jump is the new conference leading mark in the Summit League and ranks as a top five mark in the Roos record books. For Hernandez, his 7.17 meter mark represents the first time he's achieved a plus-seven meter mark in the long jump over his career. Kansas City saw many other athletes compete in the men's long including Victor Sewankambo giving us a mark of 6.96 meters, Ben Musa with 6.85 meters and Hunter Ross with 6.65 meters to all place themselves in the top 10. Â
- Women's triple jump - Williams boasted a solid triple jump mark of 11.05 meters, tying her same mark that she set last meet at the Jayhawk Spring Fling. Williams' jump of 11.05 meters ranks top 10 in the Summit League this outdoor season. Juliana Lupercio made her presence felt with a triple jump mark of 10.57 meters, her best jump since the Summit League Indoor Championships.Â
- Men's triple jump - Ross garnered himself a top three finish with a men's triple jump mark of 14.28 meters, his best jump since his mark of 14.57 meters at the Summit League Indoor Championships. Ross' 14.57 meter mark gives him the third best mark in the Summit League this outdoor season.Â
- Women's high jump - Bailey got the Roos lone first place finish at the CMU Invite due to her tremendous high jump mark of 1.61 meters. Bailey's 1.61 meter mark is the fourth best in the Summit League. Lily Bremer had a good jump of 1.51 meters in the women's high jump to place eighth in the event. Â
The Roos travel to Emporia, Kan. for their next bout at the Midwest Classic hosted by Emporia State University on Friday, April 4.
