Kansas City staged a five-run comeback in the sixth inning, but USD responded for the win
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Down five runs in the sixth inning, #6 Kansas City Softball (5-43) had every opportunity to roll over in its Summit League Championship opening round match up against third-seeded South Dakota (29-22), but the Roos did not give up. They staged a five-run rally in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game up, the team's second-highest scoring single inning all season long. However, two South Dakota runs in the bottom of the sixth would keep KC at bay and end the Roos' season, 8-6.
Lauren Parker logged Kansas City's only multi-hit performance, going 2-of-3 from the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Her one-out double in the sixth scored two runs to keep the rally alive. Maddie Parker came to the circle in relief during the Coyotes' six-run bottom of the third, getting the final two outs of the inning without any further damage. She pitched the final 3.2 innings for KC, allowing just two earned runs.
KEY MOMENTS
Bottom 2 / 0-0 | Riley Bebb retired the first six Coyote batters of the day, closing the second inning with a whiff for the lone strikeout of the game for KC's pitching staff.
Top 3 / 1-0 | The Roos struck first in the top of the third, starting with back-to-back singles from L. Parker and Gianna Lickel. A ground out advanced the runners and Briona Woods put KC on the board with a single up the middle.
Top 6 / 6-6 | In a moment of need, Kansas City strung together one of its best offensive innings of the season. Entering the inning down by five runs, Katie Noble led things off with a walk and Derika Castillo reached on an error. KC's first run scored after back-to-back wild pitches and a hit-by-pitch for Elleana Navarro put runners on the corners with just one out. Leilani Bustamante stepped into a pinch hitting situation and took the first pitch to right for an RBI, drawing KC within three. L. Parker's big moment came as she laced a double over the left fielder's head to score two and she scored two batters later on a fielder's choice by Katelyn Maciel.
SEASON IN REVIEW
One of the youngest teams in all of college softball, Kansas City's 10 freshmen combined for 211 starts on the season. The Roos honored three players on senior day: Castillo, Woods and Taylor Kvale. KC earned two spots on the All-Summit League teams at the end of the year, as Woods and Lickel each earned Honorable Mentions nods.
