TULSA, Okla. - None of the sets were decided by more than three points, but Kansas City Volleyball did what it took to win this evening against Oral Roberts, 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23).
Kansas City was led in the attack by Melanie Brecka, who finished with a 14 kill, 15 dig double-double. Ashia Dorsey had a highlight match as well, finishing with seven kills on .500 hitting and adding four total blocks (two solo, four assists).
The first two sets looked very similar, with neither team able to take an advantage. Late in both sets, with Kansas City sitting at 22 points, Dorsey put down a kill to give the Roos an edge.
The final set looked like it was going to be a breeze for the Roos. They jumped out to a 10-3 lead, thanks in part to aces by Maddie Renn and Alex Ratzlaff, but the Golden Eagles began chipping away. ORU closed the gap to one point twice, but another Renn ace and then a punishing kill by Odyssey Warren put the threat at bay.
The Roos' defense was strong all night, with four players finishing in double-digit assists. Ratzlaff led with 16, followed by Brecka and Renn with 15 each and Alli Schomers contributed 13 of her own.
The Roos and Golden Eagles will play once again tomorrow evening in Tulsa, with first serve set for 5 p.m.
