GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Kansas City (4-7-1) drops heartbreaker to North Dakota (4-5-0) in their third overtime game in a week. The Roos had the two-goal lead through fifty-six minutes before the Fighting Hawks fought back to send the game into overtime. The match may not have favored Kansas City, but there were a lot of career firsts to highlight the game.
"While it's our third overtime in three matches, I don't think it impacted our freshness," Head Coach Jess Smith said. "We didn't execute on both sides of the ball today."
The initial momentum began from Kansas City's bench as Kylie Cushing sent one right inside of the post just eight minutes after entering the game. The assist came from Sarah Karloff who has also made a big impact off the bench this season. That goal marked Cushing's first career goal and she ended the day with three shots on goal.
"I am happy for our two first career goals today," Smith said. "The finished them well and capitalized on their opportunity."
Just after halftime, freshman Anna Jennings was also hungry for her first career goal. She recovered a loose ball right outside the box and drilled a strike right past the Fighting Hawk's outstretched goalie.
After going up 2-0 in the second half, North Dakota fought back scoring their first goal in the 56-minute mark. Their game-tying goal came from a penalty kick at 72' and the Roos held on to force overtime. A quick golden goal in the first thirty seconds of overtime gave the Fighting Hawks the victory.
"Mackenzie had another solid match for us, making some key saves," Smith said. "As a team we need to do a better job helping defend our goal from second chance shots and put more pressure on attackers in shooting range."
Roos' keeper Mackenzie Caldwell had to make several big saves in the game. She ended with a career-high 10 saves. Rileigh Kuhns lead the Roos in shot attempts with five shots in Kansas City's attack.
Kansas City returns to the pitch for redemption on Sunday against the Fighting Hawks, kickoff at 2 p.m.
