Roos' Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against South Dakota

Kelby Bannerman scored a career-high 16 points in the loss
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Women's Basketball (11-17, 2-11) came out with energy in the third quarter after a rough start in the first half, but ran out of gas against South Dakota (19-9, 8-5), losing 74-60.
The Roos struggled to get stops in the first quarter as South Dakota shot 60% from the field and led by as much as nine points. Bannerman did all she could to keep the Roos close as she scored almost half the Roos points, finishing with eight in the first.
The Roos did a better job defensively against South Dakota in the second quarter, holding the Coyotes to 15 points on 27% from the field. But the Roos struggled to put the ball in the hoop as the Coyotes came out with a 2-3 zone causing four turnovers and giving up on 10 points in second quarter.
Following the half the Roos came out hot getting steals and buckets from Lisa Thomas and Emani Bennett to start the quarter. The Roos were clicking on all cylinders as they shot 84% from the field and forced four turnovers in the third quarter. All the momentum seemed to be going the Roos way after Tamia Ugass completed a three-point play to tie the game at 53, but the Roos ran out of gas and the Coyotes pulled away in the fourth quarter.

- 3Q - 9:23 / 38-29 | Bennett got the Roos third quarter scoring started after getting in between the pass for her only steal and racing down the court for a layup.
- 3Q - 6:13 / 44-37 | Thomas intercepted a poor pass thrown by South Dakota State running it back for a open layup.
- 3Q- 4:37 / 44-42 | After driving into the lane, Nariyah Simmons forced a couple of defenders to converge on her and she was able to find Em. Bennett for a wide open three point jump shot to cut the deficit to two.
- 3Q- 3:28 / 44-44 | After Emani Bennett blocked a shot that led to a shot clock violation, Bannerman found Phillips for a layup to tie the game at 44.
- 3Q - 0:02 / 53-53 | Nariyah Simmons connected with Ugass in the post and Ugass used a quick spin move to free herself up and convert the layup while being fouled. Ugass was able to knock down the free throw to tie the game at 53.
- 4Q - 3:22 / 65-58 | After a six minute scoring drought, Phillips was able to find Em. Bennett in the corner for a three-point jumpshot to give her 13 points.
STATS TO NOTE
- Bannerman finished the night with a career-high 16 points after scoring eight points in the first quarter.
- Kansas City scored 26 points in the 3rd quarter, tying the team's highest scoring total in a quarter against a league opponent.
- Emani Bennett helped out with scoring, adding 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range
- Em. Bennett finished the night with a career-high three blocks. She entered the game with just two blocked shots on the season.
