Kisoka the Hero as Roos Defeat Golden Eagles in Final Moments

Elie Kisoka scored his first goal of the season in the 87th minute for the game-winner
TULSA, Okla. - Elie Kisoka's game-winner felt like the culmination of many inevitabilities. It seemed inevitable that, after dominating possession for the entirety of the game, Kansas City Men's Soccer (6-2-4, 2-1) would eventually find the back of the net. On a larger scale it felt inevitable that Kisoka, the 2024 Summit League Offensive Player of the Year, was going to have his break-out moment. It finally came this evening, scoring the winner in the 87th minute to propel the Roos past Oral Roberts (3-8-1, 0-2), 1-0.
Kisoka has battled back from an off-season surgery and it feels as if he is finally returning to full form. This was evidenced in the Roos' Oct. 4 win over Omaha in which he attempted eight shots, the most by a Kansas City player all season. He was more limited this evening, playing just 45 minutes and attempting just one shot. The one shot was all he needed.
Time was ticking in the closing moments of the match, one in which Kansas City had out-shot Oral Roberts, 12-4. The Roos were dominant in possession, but had not been able to make the final connection. Bryce Outman worked the ball up to Mathias Baucher on the right side of the field, then made a dash for the end line. Baucher drew the attention of a pair of Golden Eagles before splitting the defense and returning the ball to Outman for a first touch, picturesque cross to the far post. There sat Kisoka, who elevated between a pair of defenders and headed the ball into the back of the net, finally breaking the dam with his first goal of the season and the 13th of his Kansas City career.
Just three minutes remained to play, but the action was far from over. Oral Roberts sought out the equalizing goal with less than 30 seconds remaining, sending a cross into the box and finding the head of Enzo Gindro for a back-post attempt. Marc Popow was positioned perfectly, blocking the ball away and securing his fourth shutout victory in the past five games.
Kansas City was bolstered by a back three of Guille Munoz, Wesley Cribb and Bryson Gosch, all of whom played the full 90 minutes. Jeremy Francou and Timothy Ospina tied for the team lead with three shots each and Popow was on the spot for two saves on the night.
The Roos return to action next weekend to continue Summit League play, hosting St. Thomas at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.
