Olivia Platt scored in the 16th minute and Anika Patton logged a clean sheet in the win
VERMILLION, S.D. - Fourth-seeded Kansas City Women's Soccer (9-7-3) withstood a late storm from #5 South Dakota in this afternoon's Summit League Quarterfinal match, taking down the Coyotes 1-0 and advancing to the semifinal round. The Roos were led by a 16th minute goal from Olivia Platt and three second half saves from Anika Patton, moving to the final site of the conference championship and setting up a meeting with top-seeded Oral Roberts.
When KC and USD met in the regular season, the Roos were dominant in possession, out-shooting the Coyotes by six. That game resulted in a draw, the Roos' first result of conference play that sparked a five-game unbeaten streak. Today, it was obvious from the jump that the Roos wanted to be aggressive early. KC strung together a threatening attack on the first possession of the game, earning a pair of early corner kicks that resulted in a Riley Porter shot.
HIGHLIGHTS
Platt did it all for the Roos' game-winning goal. It started on the defensive side of the ball as she stepped in front of a pass in the midfield and played the ball up to Ashley Koch. Platt made a run to the right sideline, chasing down a through ball from Koch and earning a corner kick. Madelyn Muhr took the incoming set piece, the lefty sending an in-swinging ball to a crowd right in front of the goal. Platt shielded a defender off her right side and poked the ball into the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season.
The second half created opportunities for the Coyotes, playing with the wind at their backs. After not allowing a single shot on target in the first half, the Roos let USD place three attempts on frame in the second half, but Patton was there to steadily save all of them. The first came on a set piece in the 50th minute, Mali Van Meeteren heading a ball towards goal and Patton laying out to corral it. Another big moment came in the 54th - a dangerous cross was played to the middle of the box and sent towards goal by Ashby Johnston. Patton went for a kick save, going on to secure the first clean sheet of her collegiate career.Â
Kansas City's back line did well to minimize an onslaught of South Dakota possession in the second half. Madleyn Muhr, Kinsley Smith, Ella Reyling and Emilia Zolesio Fernandez Blanco all played the full 90 minutes for the Roos, limiting USD three shots below its season average.
The Roos move on to the Summit League Semifinal round for the first time in program history, falling in the quarters in their previous two attempts. It is the first conference semifinal appearance for KC since 2019 when the Roos were still members of the Western Athletic Conference, and it is the first postseason win of Jess Smith's head coaching career.Â
The Roos will head to Tulsa this week, taking on the Golden Eagles on Thursday evening in a rematch of ORU's 2-1 win on Sep. 27.
