Wade Muttitt scored his second goal of the year to equalize but the Roos were unable to pull ahead
KANSAS CITY - A look at the stat sheet will tell you that No. 19 Kansas City Men's Soccer was dominant against Saint Mary's this evening. The Roos played to a 22-to-6 shot advantage, a 15-to-1 advantage in corner kicks and they out-possessed the Gaels, 71% to 29%. Soccer is a fickle sport, however, and domination on the stat sheet does not always result in domination on the score board. Tonight was a case in point as the Roos (1-0-2) were forced to settle for a draw with the Gaels (0-2-1), 1-1.
It seemed to be the Roos' game from the start, attempting five shots within the first 15 minutes. The SMC back line was strong, though, and blocked four of the five. This story line would continue throughout the evening, as Saint Mary's blocked 10 of Kansas City's 22 shots on the game. Kansas City continued to push throughout the half, looking to break through for their first goal. It was the Gaels that struck first, however, as a foul near midfield set up a free kick by TJ Dilley that was headed back by Kayvon Monfared. SMC's David Lee was the one to finish it off, giving the Gaels a lead heading into the half.
The Roos made adjustments at half, and it quickly paid dividends. KC built possession from their defensive third in the 47th minute as Elie Kisoka took a one-touch through pass that led Jeremy Francou to the edge of the box. Francou drew the attention of the keeper and send a slick pass to a wide-open Wade Muttitt, finding the back of the net for the equalizer against the school that he attended for the last three years.
The goal was Muttitt's second of the young season, the first Roo to score multiple goals on the year. Alongside his assist in Monday's win over Missouri State, he has a team-leading five points on the year. Francou's assist was his second of the year and Kisoka scored his first point of the season after leading the team with 33 points last year.
The rest of the game was owned by the Roos. Kansas City held possession for 74% of the second half and attempted 13 shots while holding the Gaels to just two, but the Roos could not find the back of the net for a game-winner. A red card to SMC in the 63rd minute gave Kansas City a man-up advantage for a large portion of the half, but the Roos were assessed a red themselves in the 85th, leveling the playing field for the end of the game.
The draw is Kansas City's second of the year, the first coming against No. 5 SMU. It marks the first time this season that the Roos have failed to score multiple times in a match.
KC is back in action on Monday evening, taking on Northern Illinois in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Roos defeated the Huskies, 6-2, in DeKalb last season.
