Caijah Anderson netted her first-career goal in the 41st minute, but Omaha earned a golden goal in the 96th
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Another great effort by Kansas City Women's Soccer pushed the Roos and Omaha beyond 90 minutes of play, but a 96th minute goal by the Mavericks gave Omaha the 2-1 decision on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm really proud of our team," Head Coach Jess Smith said. "I think the game overall was really good. We're disappointed that we didn't win, because we felt like we could have, but we ran out of gas in the overtime."
After 110 minutes of scoreless football on Friday, each side came out looking to create more pressure in the early stages of today's game. It was a fast-paced contest, and the Roos were the first to get the dam to break.Â
In the 41st minute, Hayden Burnett stepped up on the right side of the box for a free kick. She sent it towards the middle and Adrianna Pratt put a head on the ball. Two failed clearances by Omaha found the foot of Caijah Anderson, who stepped up from 18 yards out and put a clean strike on the ball into the right side of the net for her first-career collegiate goal.
"We had our outside backs going forward quite a bit more, so Caijah was in the attack a lot," Smith said. "She finished that goal fantastically, with great composure to keep it on frame and give us the lead."
The Roos' maintained their advantage into the half and well afterwards, but in the 58th minute, Omaha equalized. Mackenzie Caldwell made a great save to keep one shot out of the net, but the ball bounced right back to the foot of the Mavericks' Sophia Green, who made the most of her second opportunity.
Caldwell played a full 205-plus minutes this weekend, allowing just the two goals. She held her own in the net, making eight total saves, including four today. Caldwell has impressed in her freshman season, appearing in nine games, making eight starts and earning three winning decisions.
"(Caldwell) has been phenomenal for a freshman to come in and make some of the saves that she's been able to make," Smith said. "She's kept us in games and will continue to do so for the rest of the season. She's just getting better and better as the matches progress."
The rest of the regulation period was played to a draw, resulting in a golden goal overtime period. Omaha controlled possession for the period, finishing the game in the 96th minute.
"Omaha is a really good team and they finished the chance that they created," Smith said.
The Roos fall to 4-6-1 on the year, 4-5-1 in Summit League play. They will be back in action next weekend, traveling to North Dakota for a pair of matches against the Fighting Hawks on Friday and Sunday at 2 p.m.
"We're going to move on to next weekend and keep our heads up," Smith said.
