
Kansas Softball Hosts Western Illinois This Weekend

The Roos have won their last ten meetings with the Leathernecks
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Softball will host Western Illinois this weekend for a three-game series at the Urban Youth Academy. The Roos have won their last 10 meetings against the Leathernecks and will look to continue that streak to climb in the Summit standings. Games were moved to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday to avoid incoming weather, then the third game will be played at 11 a.m. on Sunday. - In his third season at the helm of Kansas City Softball, Head Coach Kerry Shaw scheduled a strong lineup of teams, including games against 10 ranked opponents. Shaw wrapped up his first complete season with the Roos last year, finishing with the first winning season in a decade and first win over a ranked team in program history.
- Kloe Hilbrenner picked up where she left off last season but in the leadoff spot of the lineup. She is currently hitting .363, a .605 slugging percentage, with 45 hits, nine doubles, three triples, five homeruns and 22 stolen bases; all top-ten in the Summit thus far.
- Hilbrenner has recorded a 7-game and 8-game hit streak on two occasions this season. She also has 16 multi-hit games, including a four-hit game against Kennesaw State on March 6th.
- Katherine Karnatz made her first appearance this season after returning from injury. Last weekend, she played two games at shortstop and hit in the six-spot of the lineup, recording a double in her first hit this season.
- Designated hitter, Delainey Fenoglio, follows with a .315 batting average, a team-leading six homeruns and 23 RBI and a team-low 12 strikeouts. She earned Summit League Player of the Week honors on March 7 after her performance at the Razorback Rumble where she hit .571.
- With Fenoglio's homerun against Kansas last week, she moved into sixth on the all-time career homeruns list with 16.
- Roos' first baseman, Katelyn Garcia, leads all position players with a .992 fielding percentage and 231 putouts, with just two errors in 238 chances.
- Rightfielder, Marina Karnes, has just one error in the outfield with 38 putouts. She is also hitting .274, third best in the KC lineup.
- Transfer Sydney Nichols, from Wichita State, has brought more power to Kansas City's lineup with four homeruns on the season and 14 RBI.
- Ally Vonfeldt tallies up extra-base hits for the Roos, hitting six doubles, two triples and two homeruns this season with a .382 slugging percentage. Her 15 homeruns in her career are good for seventh on the all-time homeruns list in program history.
- Alexis D'Ambrosio has a keen eye, leading the team with 17 walks and some pop in the bat with two homeruns and four doubles this season.
- Kansas City has hit 22 homeruns this season thus far, with eight different Roos contributing.
- Kansas City has a five-man pitching staff, starred by senior ace, Mia Hoveland, who currently has 356 career strikeouts. Hoveland has thrown five complete games in conference play. In those complete games, the opposition earned just six runs in 35 innings pitched, while striking out 24 times.
- KC received a sophomore transfer, Casey Stout, from North Central Missouri College who recorded a 25-3 record last season with 281 strikeouts, second-best in the NJCAA in 2021. Her strongest performances are when she came on in relief against North Dakota and St. Thomas, pitching 8.2 innings, recording a 0.00 ERA, while only allowing five hits and recording nine strikeouts.
- The Roos also return sophomore Camryn Stickel, who finished her freshman campaign with a 14-9 record on the mound. Stickel quickly made her way onto the record books, notching the fifth most wins in a single season in program history.
- The 2022 freshman class is comprised of four impact players. Sydney Reid and Lexy Smith will see time on the infield, while Audrey Danielson and Jenna Milan will make appearances in the pitching rotation.
- This will be the 41st meeting between the Leathernecks and the Roos. In last year's four game series, Kansas City swept Western Illinois on their home turf.
- Coming into this weekend, Western Illinois has a 7-28 overall record and a 3-9 record in conference play.
- The Leathernecks are currently on a seven-game skid, with their last win coming over North Dakota on April 2. WIU sits in seventh place in the Summit, right below Kansas City.
- Fifth-year pitcher Abby Carlin and designated player Savannah Rodriguez were picked 2022 Summit League Players to Watch.
- Western Illinois has the lowest batting average, fielding percentage and second-lowest team ERA in the Summit League.
- Senior outfielder, Ami Ill, is the Leathernecks' lone hitter batting over .300. She is their leadoff hitter and has a team-high 12 runs scored.
- The Leathernecks have only hit six homeruns all season and four of those are off the bat of Georgia Rea, a freshman out of Lawrence, Kan.
- Abby Carlin throws the most innings in the circle, pitching 95.2 innings with a 2.78 ERA and 86 strikeouts.
- The other four Western Illinois pitchers have just one victory under their belt, and all have between a 5.97 and 11.81 ERA.
