Roos Sweep UTSA in Final Game of Mizuno Classic

It was a back-and-forth battle in windy Cowgirl Stadium this morning. After a two-run homerun by the Roadrunners in the first inning, Ally Vonfeldt answered back in the top of the third. Vonfeldt bombed one directly over centerfield to bring in Kloe Hilbrenner and Lia Lombardini and gave the Roos the 3-2 lead. That homerun marked her third homerun of the weekend and sixth of the year.
An error by the Kansas City defense in the bottom of the fourth allowed the Roadrunners to tie it up. But the speed of Hilbrenner on the bases proved to be what the Roos needed to grab the lead in the top of the fifth. She came home on a wild pitch and ended the game with five stolen bases and 14 on the season.
After another solo shot by UTSA, Kansas City grabbed the one-run lead once again in the top of the sixth. Hilbrenner hit a single to score Faith Willis who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. The Roadrunners would tie it up in the bottom of the sixth after stringing a couple hits together. The score would remain tied at the end of regulation and send the game into an exciting extra inning.
The game came down to the eighth inning where Kansas City put the pedal to the metal on offense. Faith Willis led off the eighth with a single to right. Abbey Sciara moved herself and Willis into scoring position with a poke into right field. UTSA walked Katherine Karnatz to load the bases for a force out at home. It worked for one out, but Vonfeldt came to the plate for another huge at-bat. She doubled to right-center and scored Hilbrenner and Karnatz. Delainey Fenoglio then singled to score Lia Lombardini who earlier notched an RBI when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Willis blew the game wide open in her second at-bat of the inning where she tripled and cleared the loaded bases. Abbey Sciara returned the favor and brought home Willis to extend the Roos' lead to 13-5 going into the bottom of the eighth. UTSA would hit a three-run bomb in the bottom of the inning but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the lead the Roos had built themselves.
Kansas City finished the Mizuno Classic 3-2 with a win over a top 10 nationally ranked team. They will return home to face #17 Arkansas on Tuesday, March 23 at 4 p.m. at the Urban Youth Academy, Home of Kansas City Softball.
